FRIDAY, July 18

8:15 Gather at our meeting room, grab coffee and get started.
8:30 Russ Sharp, Bank of Montreal: Learning in 2012 - What should we be doing today? The learning industry is changing rapidly - our learner profiles are changing, different supporting technologies and infrastructure are being introduced everyday, and the businesses we support have high expectations for the learning. At BMO we are working through a framework which will lead us to recommendations for an integrated future state encompassing access, tracking and reporting, delivery, development, and so on. I can share where we are with this, show some of our current/proposed solutions, and would be most interested in hearing what others are thinking and doing.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION TOPICS

We use roundtable discussions to cover general company news updates and topics that haven't made it onto the formal agenda. Often, roundtable time provides some of the greatest value of our meetings. Among the informal topics during this meeting's roundtables, we'll discuss:

  • Russ Sharp, Bank of Montreal: BMO has recently encountered some contracting issues with off the shelf content providers resulting from recent U.S. legislation. This has lead to a below expectation experience for us. Has anyone been working with off-the-shelf content providers recently, and if so what has the experience been?
  • Russ Sharp, Bank of Montreal: Perhaps it would be useful to learn what others are doing to orient their new employees to their organizations. For us, the new approach will take the existing online program - First Connections - and head in following direction: early thinking is it would be reduced from 3 hrs to 20 or 30 minutes, be on-line and include greater use of video (if technology permits). Pointers to all regulatory and HR materials to add navigation for new hires.
  • Michelle Jansen, Lockheed Martin Space Systems: Alternative learning methods (i.e., informal), what are others doing in this arena, are they measuring success or not?
  • Michelle Jansen, Lockheed Martin Space Systems: Measuring the value of learning.
  • Michelle Jansen, Lockheed Martin Space Systems: Visionary/futuristic learning trends.
  • Laura Abihider, Lockheed Martin Space Systems: Knowledge management approaches and measuring OD effectiveness.
  • Phyllis Huckabee, Quidel: Quidel Leadership Institute - a grand name for very basic programs. As a small company with little history of formal training, we are taking baby steps to get started, so there isn't a lot I can share with the group (probably a lot they could suggest!). However, I would be happy to talk about our "Food for Thought" program that we've just started with supervisors. In terms of informal learning, it is getting very positive reviews. Phyllis' PPT Slides
  • Harry Wittenberg, Apple: Brief description of a workshop in developing valid assessments.
  • Pat Golden, Booz Allen Hamilton: I would like to find out if anyone has implemented the Enterprise Learning Management System with Oracle/Peoplesoft, and if their company integrated performance management and development modules.
  • Pat Golden, Booz Allen Hamilton: I am also interested in discussing job titles and organizational structures, how organizations are organizing their teams to support the business.
  • Pat Golden, Booz Allen Hamilton: Another topic might be tuition reimbursement and how that is managed in their companies.
  • Pat Golden, Booz Allen Hamilton: Finally, the innovative learning environment, virtual worlds, and how they are being used.
  • Linda LaRue, Kellogg: Comprehensive HR process, systems, and organization redesign - starting an 18 month initiative
  • Linda LaRue, Kellogg: HR tools for handling mergers and acquisitions - in development by Organizational Effectiveness. Linda's M&A Toolkit Overview PPT Slides
  • (Additional topics will be identified at the start of the meeting, and throughout.)
