August 5th. Assume this is the same young Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) that I've seen lately in the same spot, but it seems to be moulting.

This young male Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) looks more like an adult every day.

This Deer Fly (Chrysops sp.) landed on my hand and was swatted. Dead, but entact enough for me to take pictures. Note the fancy eyes.

The Barred Owl (Strix varia), perched not far from where I usually see it. (It soon flew away.)

Back to Old Colchester Road in the afternoon. Cement pour was already done and the workers gone for the day. Sorry I missed the action.

Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea maculosa) at Cranberry Bog.

August 6th. Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) spending the day deep inside an Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) flower. That's the reliable place to find them.

Back around 3:00 P.M. to see if forms had been removed from the bridge abutments. Sure enough, the near side was done at least.

Lots of rebar staged for whatever the next steps will be.

August 7th. The Barred Owl (Strix varia) barely visible in dappled sun.

Two Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta) at Norton's Pond.

August 8th. Green Frog (Lythobates clamitans).

Saturday, so no work. Face of the near wall has been waterproofed.) I can't see the other side to know if it was done too.

Holes for water drainage... maybe?

Forms are bundled up to be taken away.

Back at the marsh, a Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) and a Wood Duck (Aix sponsa).

The Barred Owl (Strix varia) in deep shade and behind twigs and foliage.

Head pretty scruffy looking.

A Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) landed on my shoe. The red spots are on the underside of the wings.

The White Admiral (subspecies Limentits arthemis arthemis) is generally found to our north. It has a broad white band on the upper wing surfaces. In Connecticut, it's not unusual to see intergrades showing some evidence of the white bands.

August 8th. Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodius) at Raymond Brook Marsh.

Mica, a new dog to the trail, taking a dip.

This is what you face trying to get pictures of the Barred Owl (Strix varia) near the Colchester Spur junction.

Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) at Norton's Pond.

Great Blue Heron there too, after not seeing it for a few days. (Or maybe a different bird.)

Back out around 3:30 P.M. A load of dirt delivered.

One of a few nifty little mushrooms down by Grayville Falls. Maybe a Fading Scarlet Waxy Cap (Hygrophorus miniatus)?

Decent amout of water through Grayville Falls.

Sunflowers (Helianthus sp.) in the Grayville Falls parking area.
