July 15th. Button Bush or Honey Balls (Cephalanthus occidentalis).

 

 

Self Heal or Heals All (Prunella vulgaris).

 

 

Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia).

 

 

Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata).

 

 

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) and a halictid Sweat Bee (Augochloropsis metallica) at the Route 207 crossing.

 

 

 

 

 

A male Flower Fly (Family Syrphidae, Toxomerus sp.).

 

 

Next, a walk east from Depot Hill Road in Cobalt. Seedbox (Ludwigia alternifolia). First time I've seen it. The upper flower has lost 2 of its petals, as had most of the other flowers nearby.

 

 

 

 

 

Steeplebush or Hardhack (Spiraea tomentosa).

 

 

Tumbling Flower Beetles (Family Mordellidae) on Meadowsweet (Spiraea latifolia). Note the Crab Spider at the top right.

 

 

Sulphur-winged Grasshopper (Arphia sulphurea).

Maybe a male Flower Fly (Family Syrphidae).

 

 

A mated pair of Banded Longhorn Beetles (Typocerus velutinus) on Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota). Note the small black weevil in the upper right...

A species of Duskywing Skipper (Erynnis sp.) on Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)...

Finally, a brief stop at the pond east of River Road.

July 16th. The White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the usual grazing spot far across the marsh. Couldn't see the fawn.

 

 

Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). What's that white thing it's eating?

 

 

Ah, it's a mushroom stem.

 

 

 

 

 

Nibbling away.

 

 

 

 

 

A distant Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodius)...

 

 

..and a much closer one. Note the Cattails (Typha latifolia) in the background.

 

 

July 17th. At the Route 207 parking area, Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis).

 

 

Asiatic Dayflower (Commelina communis).

 

 

A female Flower Fly (Toxomerus geminatus) on Chicory (Cichorium intybus).

 

 

Hedge Bindweed (Convolvulus sepium)...

 

 

...now with a Halictid Sweat Bee (Augochloropsis metallica).
